Don was the painter of several portraits of Major General James Patrick Murray, and the sponsor of George Don Murray, last son of the latter. James Patrick Murray acted as Aide de Camp for Sir George Don when the former joined the Army at the age of nearly 17. Don was awarded the Military Order of the Bath in 1821.
