Letter written by Samuel to his nephew JW Hopkins, 11/8/1848:
" Ihope the Byers are well. Tell dear Mary I did not write her again. How is her son in the Indian Army? I am glad to find all well at Clent and Birmingham. I am glad to find Piercy is so well. He must be about 88 years old. I remember well his throwing me into a pond at Sidemeere, or Sidemoor near Bromsgrove, and he was engaged to my beloved sister Marianne. I was happy to hear that John Piercy to the living of, I believe, Rostock (or something like what I have written). I cannot read Adophus' hand easily. I am sorry to hear that Harriet Houseman (late Roe) is not very well off in the World. Where is Mrs Snow, she was a fine creature. Tell me if you have in your possession Capt. John Worrall's portrait, I remember said portrait perfectly, it was many years in Aunt Rawson's room where I often slept. He was fifty years in that regiment, and was buried at Wilmslow near Macclesfield. He took and brought off the Standard of the French Army (not Regimental Standard) at Malplaquet. He was my dear mother's father. HM George 3rd told my mother that he ought to have been made General for that service".
