Individual Note (shared)
The "Mrs Henry Cruso" referred to in Mary's diaries, was Mary 's sister Martha. Martha was three years younger than Mary Elizabeth and like their brother Richard and their father, also suffered from Gout. Some 12 years before (August 1824) she had married Henry Cruso, the younger brother of Mary's husband, shortly after he, had entered into partnership with her brother Richard and a young Walsall inventor, Francis Gybben Spilsbury, as a "silk manufacturers, dyers, makers of patent machinery and tanners". The marriage was destined to be short lived for Henry Cruso died. of consumption in 1829 and in 1836, therefore, Martha was a widow. Martha later married a surgeon, George Leigh, MRCS, and lived for much of her life at The Grove, Arnold, Nottingham where she died, childless, in 1879.
